Kiddie Bhel

Quick MealToddler FoodParty FoodKid FriendlyNo Cooking
Bhel puri is an ever popular snack among adults and kids alike. But for the really young palate the tangy sauces that go into Bhel Puri and the raw onions maybe a little too much. This Kiddie Bhel overcomes those challenges while providing for a healthy snack or perhaps a meal in some cases :). This recipe does not call for mandatory store bought snacks, so it is very ideal for toddlers who may have a delicate tummy to process the snacks.

Kind of Food: Side / Snack
How long: 10 minutes

Makes: 1 cup
Pots & Pans:
Knife, bowl to mix

Ingredients:
1/2 cup of Puffed rice(Murmura) or puffed rice cereal

3 Tbs of chopped mangoes cut into pea size pieces

3 Tbs of boiled potatoes cut into pea size pieces

1/3 cup assorted fruits like apples, pears, grapes, pineapple and cantaloupes cut into small pieces (avoid bananas as they will turn the bhel mushy).  Use whatever fruits you have handy
.
2 tsp date chutney

1 Tbsp fine sev (snack available in the Indian grocery store -optional)

How to make:
Toss all the ingredients mentioned gently without mashing the fruits with the exception of the sev.  This is your bhel.

Top the bhel with sev. Again, the addition of sev is optional and can be avoided.

Catering to the adult palate
Add coriander chutney , chaat masala, cumin powder, black salt (a pinch) and any snack available in your pantry. The ratios between the chutneys and the spice powders mentioned here are a matter of personal preference. Remember it is always possible to add more, but it is not always easy to remove. So start adding little a time.

Tips, tricks & alternatives
You can set aside fruits that you cut for fruit salad or for any other recipe and this kiddie bhel will take no time to put together.
For kids who are just teething letting the kiddie bhel sit for 10 minutes before serving. This will soften the puffed rice.

Serving Ideas:
With older siblings the kiddie bhel can be placed on Tortilla scoops for a fun after school snack.
